Purpose

The PFIC Network Small Grant Program provides funding to qualified applicants for scientific and/or clinical research. The 2023-2024 announcement invited applications that addressed any impact PFIC and PFIC-related diseases and/or PFIC diagnosis or treatments may have on patients and/or the patient environment. Studies that include patient-reported outcomes (PRO), measures of health-related quality of life, or that otherwise incorporate the patient and caretaker perspective were encouraged. 

Background

PFIC Network is committed to facilitating accurate diagnoses, improving treatment options, slowing disease progression, and finding a cure for PFIC diseases. The Small Grant Program is designed to contribute to this mission by funding research that ultimately leads to improvements in the lives of PFIC patients and their caretakers. The 2023-2024  Small Grant Opportunity focused on projects that improve the understanding of disease impact. Including the patient experience in this endeavor can support progress toward a better understanding and integration of research results within the PFIC community

Award Information

In 2024,  PFIC Network will award one proposal  with a budget limit of $30,000. The award period is one year. A virtual progress report meeting will be scheduled 6 months after the starting date, and a written report detailing outcomes is expected at the end of  the year. PFIC Network invites proposals for independent studies, pilot research, or studies that extend (aspects of) ongoing or recent research.

Eligibility Information

PFIC Network requires all applicants to have a full or part-time position at an academic, non-profit, or government institution and a PhD, MD, an RN or a comparable certification. We encourage individuals from historically underserved or underrepresented communities to apply.

Application Submission

Required elements of an application include: 

1. Research Plan (4 page limitation)
   The research plan should include
   – A brief (200 word) lay abstract
   – Background and study aim(s)
   – Research strategy describing the study design, methods, and planned analyses. If the proposed research involves human subjects it is necessary to include the participant demographics, recruitment plan, and IRB approval from the applicant’s organization
   – Deliverables describing the endpoints and impact of the proposed study
2. Applicant Biosketch (2-page limitation)
3. Budget (Total Cost is composed of Indirect and Direct Cost, with Indirect Cost limited to 15% of Direct Cost)
